Round Lake reaches a depth of 180 feet and features 59 acres of old-growth forest with numerous tuliptrees and sugar maples along its perimeter.
The area remained protected from deforestation in the 1800s through the efforts of the Collin family, who settled there in 1817 and preserved the forest.
Scientists conduct sediment studies at Round Lake to analyze historical climate changes and ecological transformations recorded in layers spanning thousands of years.
Visitors access Round Lake through Green Lakes State Park, which provides nature trails, educational programs, and opportunities for hiking and birdwatching.
The lake maintains a meromictic status, meaning its bottom waters do not mix with surface waters annually, creating distinct ecological conditions.
