Rockbridge State Nature Preserve, Natural bridge within state preserve in Rockbridge, US
Rockbridge State Nature Preserve contains a natural stone bridge that spans across a ravine, formed from massive sandstone blocks. The property includes a rock shelter and forested hillsides carved by the Hocking River, with trails winding through the wooded terrain.
Ohio purchased this preserve in 1978 to protect the geological formations along the Hocking River. This action secured one of the state's most notable natural bridge structures for future generations.
The stone bridge gave its name to the nearby community of Rockbridge, showing how this natural wonder shaped the identity of the region. Today, visitors come to experience the power of nature and feel connected to the landscape.
Two loop trails guide visitors through the preserve to the natural bridge and rock shelter. Wear sturdy footwear since the paths are uneven and can become slippery after rain.
Water carved this stone bridge by eroding softer layers of Mississippian Black Hand sandstone, creating one of Ohio's largest natural bridge formations. This geological marvel is one of only twelve known natural bridges in the entire state.
