Karshner Mound

Karshner Mound is a large earthen mound built long ago and now sits in an open farm field near Laurelville. It has a cone-shaped appearance and rises visibly above the surrounding ground, making it easy to spot from a distance.

The Adena people constructed this mound as a burial site over 1000 years before the modern era. Officials added it to the National Register of Historic Places in 1974 to protect its significance as an archaeological site.

This mound served as a burial place for the Adena people who lived in the Ohio region during ancient times. Visitors can observe how the structure reflects the importance these communities placed on honoring and remembering their dead.

The mound sits on private farmland near Salt Creek in Hocking County and can be viewed from nearby roads. Visitors should respect the private property and observe from a distance to help preserve this ancient site.

The mound has never been plowed or disturbed by farming, which allows it to keep its original shape from ancient times. This protection from cultivation means the site remains largely unchanged and offers a genuine window into how the Adena people built their earthworks.
