Cantwell Cliffs

Cantwell Cliffs is a sandstone formation in Hocking Hills State Park featuring steep walls that rise dramatically above streams and deep ravines. The rock formation creates a layered landscape accessible through interconnected hiking trails that wind through the gorge.

The cliffs bear the name of the Cantwell family who settled in this area during early frontier times. A fatal incident involving one of the brothers became part of the site's local history.

The trails cross uneven terrain with rocks and loose sections, so sturdy footwear and careful footing are essential. It is best to visit during dry weather when all surfaces are safe to walk on.

A narrow rock passage called Fat Woman's Squeeze forces hikers to squeeze through a tight opening between massive fallen boulders. This surprising section is a highlight of the route and tests both balance and nerve.
