Mount Oval, National Register historic building south of Circleville, Ohio, United States.
Mount Oval is a brick building with a metal roof, wood elements, and stone components sitting on an oval hill south of Circleville. The structure displays clear Palladian architectural style with its distinctive design features.
William Renick built Mount Oval in 1832 after marrying Jane Boggs, whose father John had purchased the land from the government in 1806. The location on this hill was chosen deliberately for commanding views of the surrounding area and as a sign of prosperity.
The house contains a specialized room for cattle traders that shows how important livestock dealing was in this region. Visitors can still see today the practical setup that was designed for conducting cattle business.
You can only visit the building with a guided tour offered on specific days from May through September. You can get information and make reservations through the Clarke-May Museum.
Mount Oval was one of the first three properties in Pickaway County to be listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1974. This early recognition reflects its importance to American history.
