Hopewell Culture National Historical Park

The Hopewell Culture National Historical Park contains 23 earthen burial mounds arranged in geometric patterns across the Ohio landscape near Chillicothe.

Between 200 BC and 500 AD, Native Americans constructed these monumental earthworks, which served as ceremonial and burial grounds for their communities.

The geometric earthworks demonstrate the mathematical and architectural knowledge of ancient Native American societies through precise circles, squares, and octagonal formations.

The Mound City Group visitor center provides exhibits, restrooms, parking facilities, and an orientation film explaining the archaeological significance of the site.

Ancient artifacts found at the site include copper sculptures, silver ornaments, and an obsidian blade transported over 2000 miles from its source.
