Hopewell Culture National Historical Park
Hopewell Culture National Historical Park, Archaeological site in Ross County, United States.
Hopewell Culture National Historical Park is an archaeological site in Ohio containing 23 earthen mounds arranged in geometric patterns. These structures were constructed by Native Americans over a period spanning 2000 years of history.
Native Americans built these earthen structures between 200 BC and 500 AD for ceremonial and burial purposes. The sites served as important gathering places for communities that had developed considerable organizational skills.
The geometric earthworks show how ancient Native Americans understood mathematics and design through precisely built circles, squares, and octagonal shapes. Visitors can observe how these forms were deliberately arranged across the landscape.
The visitor center provides exhibits and orientation materials to understand the site's significance. Wear comfortable walking shoes since paths cross grassy areas and climb over mounds, which can be muddy after rain.
Among the discoveries are copper sculptures and silver ornaments showing that this place had trade connections to distant regions. A particularly striking artifact is an obsidian blade that originally came from sources in the Northwest over 2000 miles away.
