Adena Mansion

Adena Mansion is a stone house designed by architect Benjamin Henry Latrobe and sits on grounds with formal gardens arranged in terraces, several supporting buildings, and groves of trees. The location offers views across the Scioto River valley toward distant hills.

Thomas Worthington, who served as Ohio's sixth governor and later as a U.S. Senator, commissioned this house in 1807 with architect Benjamin Henry Latrobe. The structure reflects the ambitions and resources of Ohio's early political leadership during the nation's formative years.

The rooms display furnishings and household items from the early 19th century, showing how prominent families lived during that time. Visitors can see the objects and spaces that shaped daily life for people of wealth and influence in Ohio.

Guided tours take visitors through the house and across the terraced gardens, with regular tour times available throughout the week. The grounds are extensive, so plan enough time and wear comfortable walking shoes.

The view from the north side of the property toward the Logan Range inspired the design of Ohio's state seal. This detail shows how a specific landscape view became part of the state's official symbol.
