Built in 1856 by John L. Routt, who later became Colorado's first governor, this residence remained the home of attorney Ruben M. Benjamin for 60 years.
The residence represents architectural developments of the 1850s with its Classical Revival design, symmetrical facade, and decorative wooden brackets supporting the roof.
Located at coordinates 40°28'41"N and 88°59'10"W, the property maintains its original exterior appearance and stands within the East Grove Street Historic District.
Abraham Lincoln served as the bar examiner for Ruben M. Benjamin in 1856, the same year the house construction was completed.
