Rocky River Presbyterian Church, church building in North Carolina, United States of America
Rocky River Presbyterian Church is a brick building completed in 1860 near Concord, North Carolina, constructed in Renaissance Revival style. The grounds span about 43 acres and include multiple historic structures, such as a wooden Session House built in 1839, a two-story brick manse from 1873, and four cemeteries.
The congregation was founded in the early 1750s and began as a small log building near a river crossing. The first permanent pastor, Alexander Craighead, arrived from Virginia in 1758 and shaped the church's development.
The church takes its name from the nearby Rocky River, reflecting the congregation's deep connection to their land. Visitors can see today how the grounds continue to serve as a gathering place for worship, family events, and community meetings.
The church is located at the intersection of Rocky River Road and Lower Rocky River Road in Cabarrus County on quiet country roads. The spacious grounds can be explored on foot and offer plenty of room to walk around and view the various historic structures.
The congregation founded Rocky River Academy in 1812, a school that provided education to local children until the early 1900s. This school was an important part of community life and helped many young people gain literacy and skills.
