The North Charlotte Historic District spans 155.5 acres and contains 282 buildings that showcase architectural designs from the early twentieth century.
Established in 1903, this district includes the Highland Park Mill No. 3, Mecklenburg Mill from 1905, and Johnston Mill constructed in 1913.
The district preserves various architectural styles including Bungalow, Craftsman, Late Victorian, and vernacular Victorian designs that represent mill village construction methods.
The Historic District Commission requires property owners to obtain a Certificate of Appropriateness before making any exterior modifications to buildings within the district.
The Grinnell Manufacturing Company, Hand Pharmacy Building from 1904, and Charlotte Fire Department Engine Company No. 9 from 1937 remain as commercial landmarks.
