Ruddell General Store
Ruddell General Store is a historic shop building in Glenville that has served the community since around 1890. The simple wooden structure at the corner of Main Street and Court Street contains original shelves and counters displaying typical goods like dry goods and household supplies.
William Kerr Ruddell built the store around 1890, making it a center for community life. After his move in 1916, the building changed operators multiple times, was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1998, and now serves as a museum and community center.
The store's name comes from William Kerr Ruddell, its founder, and remains a local reference point. Beyond shopping, it served as a gathering place where neighbors met, shared news, and felt part of a connected community.
The store opens during large community events and school visits rather than on a regular daily basis. It helps to check opening times beforehand or ask about local events to make sure you can get inside.
The building was acquired by the West Virginia State Folk Festival in the 1970s and was converted into its headquarters and archive space. This transformation turned the old shop into a living cultural center that preserves regional traditions and supports festival activities.
