Rutgers Gardens, Botanical garden at Rutgers University, New Jersey.
Rutgers Gardens is a botanical garden at Rutgers University covering about 130 acres, with roughly 60 acres designed as specialty plant beds and collections. The grounds include tree collections, open lawns, and numerous walking paths that wind through the property near New Brunswick.
The land was acquired in 1917 as an agricultural experimental station focused initially on peach breeding research. Over time it evolved into the broader botanical garden that exists today.
The gardens house one of the largest American Holly collections and serve as a learning space where visitors can discover plant varieties through year-round educational activities.
The gardens are open from Tuesday to Sunday, with the main entrance at Holly House. Wear comfortable shoes since the grounds are extensive and involve considerable walking.
The Donald B. Lacey Display Garden features rotating seasonal displays of unusual annuals, tropical plants, herbs, and vegetables throughout the year. These changing beds offer visitors different plant combinations to discover across seasons.
