Wood Lawn, Historic house in New Brunswick, US.
Wood Lawn is a historic house in New Brunswick that features Neoclassical elements including a mansard roof with dormers, clapboard siding, and two main floors above a basement. The house now serves as the administrative headquarters of a university-based political research institute.
A wealthy manufacturer built this house in 1830 using the fashionable style of that era. A prominent architecture firm redesigned it in 1905, transforming it into the Classical style that was in vogue then.
The house shows features from multiple building styles that were layered over its long history and reveal how architectural taste changed over time. These layered changes are visible when you look at the different parts of the facade.
The house stands on a university campus and is not open to visitors as a museum but serves as an office building. You can see and photograph the exterior from the campus grounds, but indoor tours are not normally available.
The building underwent a rare complete architectural restyling from Victorian form into Classical order, a costly and involved undertaking that reflected how important the house was to its owners. This kind of major transformation was uncommon for residential properties of that time.
