New Brunswick, County seat in Middlesex County, New Jersey, United States
New Brunswick is a city on the shore of the Raritan River in the state of New Jersey and seat of Middlesex County. Streets run between residential areas with brick houses, commercial buildings, and university campuses, while bridges cross the river toward Highland Park.
The settlement began in 1730 on the Raritan River and developed quickly into a trading center along the road between New York and Philadelphia. During the War of Independence an officer read the Declaration here and the town remained the scene of several troop movements between 1776 and 1777.
The original quarter along Albany Street shows houses from the 18th century, while around George Street and Easton Avenue students and locals gather in cafés and shops. Rutgers buildings spread across several neighborhoods and shape daily life with lectures, sports events, and public gatherings.
The center can be explored on foot, with bus stops along the main streets and a train station near Albany Street. Many facilities are accessible for wheelchair users and signs make orientation easier between campus and downtown.
The Johnson & Johnson headquarters sits a few streets from the train station and the company museum shows historical medical products since the 1880s. An abandoned railway viaduct along Boyd Street has been transformed into a green walkway leading to Donaldson Park.
