Middlesex County, Administrative county in New Jersey, US
Middlesex County is an administrative district in New Jersey stretching from the Raritan Valley region to the northern Jersey Shore, covering communities such as Edison, Old Bridge, and New Brunswick. The district sits between the major metropolitan areas of New York and Philadelphia, connecting suburban towns with smaller cities along the coast and river.
The region was established in March 1683 as one of four administrative districts within East Jersey, holding its first court sessions in Piscataway. The administrative seat was later moved to New Brunswick, where the central courthouse district remains today.
The area hosts one of North America's largest South Asian commercial districts along Oak Tree Road, with textile shops, restaurants, and grocery stores. In this part of the region, visitors encounter today a mix of Indian cuisine, Bollywood music, and traditional sari shops that have developed since the late 1980s.
The region maintains over 6300 acres (2550 hectares) of public parks and connects to major urban centers through the Northeast Corridor rail line and an extensive highway network. Visitors can move between communities using regional trains and intercity bus lines that link the larger towns and townships.
Rutgers University operates one of North America's oldest geological collections in this district, holding fossils and minerals from the Cretaceous period. This scientific collection sits in several buildings across the campus and is used for academic research and occasional public exhibitions.
