Mary Ellis Burial Site, Historic grave in New Brunswick, United States
Mary Ellis's burial site is a grave marker on a pyramid-shaped stone structure located in the parking lot of a cinema on U.S. Route 1. The location also holds markers for seven other family members and remains visible from the parking area.
In 1813, a woman purchased farmland overlooking the Raritan River and kept daily watch for her sea captain until her death in 1828. Her burial place was then shaped by the land's transformation from rural property to modern commercial development.
The site represents a personal story that locals recognize as part of their city's past and identity. Visitors can sense the connection between this individual's life and the broader growth of New Brunswick.
The burial site is accessible from the theater parking lot and can be easily spotted from the street. It is best visited during daytime when the lot is open and the markers are clearly visible.
The burial site has endured multiple transformations as the surrounding land shifted from farmland to department store, flea market, and finally a modern cinema. This unusual survival makes it a rare remnant of an earlier era preserved within contemporary development.
