Sam's Throne

Sam's Throne is a protected natural area featuring sandstone cliffs that rise approximately 75 feet (23 m) above the Big Creek valley and create multiple rock faces for climbing. The Atoka sandstone formations contain natural pockets, knobs, and crack systems throughout.

Local climbers established the first routes during the late 1970s, transforming this natural formation into a climbing destination. These early developments laid the foundation for today's climbing hub.

Climbers gather here to share techniques and develop new routes across the rock formations. This community has turned the site into a regional hub for the sport.

The area has six primitive camping sites where visitors must bring their own water supply, as only basic facilities with vault toilets are available. Planning ahead and bringing necessary supplies is essential for a comfortable stay.

Over fifty different climbing routes span the area at varying skill levels, distributed across the natural pockets and crack systems of the sandstone formations. Both beginning and experienced climbers find suitable challenges here.
