Schmeeckle Reserve

Schmeeckle Reserve is a large nature preserve with wetlands, woodlands, prairies, and lakes spread across its grounds. These varied landscapes support different types of plants and animals that visitors encounter while walking the trails.

The land was once farmland before becoming a nature preserve in 1976. This transformation reflected growing efforts to protect natural environments in the region.

The Wisconsin Conservation Hall of Fame established its headquarters at the reserve in 1984, emphasizing the location's environmental significance.

The reserve has over 5 miles of marked trails connecting different natural areas and is easy to navigate on foot. Wear sturdy shoes and stay on the paths to protect the landscape and avoid hazards.

Lake Joanis within the reserve was created artificially in the 1970s and now serves as home to water birds and other aquatic life. This constructed water body demonstrates how land development can unexpectedly create new wildlife habitats.
