Rib Mountain State Park, State park in Marathon County, Wisconsin.
Rib Mountain State Park is a Wisconsin state park in Marathon County, built around a quartzite hill that rises sharply above the surrounding flat terrain. A network of trails crosses forested slopes and rocky outcrops, leading to an observation tower at the top of the hill.
The quartzite rock beneath the park formed roughly 1.5 billion years ago, making it one of the oldest exposed rock formations on the continent. Wisconsin set the area aside as a state park in 1927, partly to protect the rock and partly to give people a place to enjoy the outdoors close to Wausau.
For people living around Wausau, this park is a place they return to throughout the year for hiking, skiing, and family outings. Standing on the summit, you look out over a landscape that is nearly flat in every direction, which makes the mountain feel out of place in the best way.
The park is open year-round, and trails range from easy walks along the base to steeper climbs toward the summit, so visitors of different fitness levels can find a route that works for them. In winter, some trails are groomed for cross-country skiing, and it is worth checking conditions before heading out since weather on the hill can change quickly.
Although the hill looks tall compared to its surroundings, the top sits at around 1,700 feet (520 meters) above sea level, which is enough to rank it among the highest points in Wisconsin. What makes that striking is not the height itself but the fact that it is a monadnock, a lone rock mass that outlasted everything around it simply because the quartzite was too hard to erode.
