Scholastic Building, Corporate office building in SoHo, Manhattan, US
The Scholastic Building is a modern office structure in SoHo with ten stories and facades of steel, terra-cotta, and stone. It occupies a significant portion of the block between Prince and Spring Streets and houses thousands of workers.
The building was completed in 2001 and was the first new construction project in the SoHo Cast Iron Historic District in many decades. It replaced a low garage structure that stood on the site.
The building displays design choices that show how architecture evolved in SoHo. Visitors can see how modern materials like steel and terra-cotta mix with classical forms.
The building sits at 557 Broadway between Prince and Spring Street, a central location easy to reach on foot. The busy area offers many restaurants and shops within walking distance nearby.
The building was designed by Italian architect Aldo Rossi and remains his only structure in New York. The facades facing Broadway and Mercer Street show different design approaches.
