The Wall, Aluminium sculpture in SoHo, United States
The Wall is an aluminium sculpture that projects from a building facade at the intersection of Broadway and Houston Street in Manhattan. The form extends three-dimensionally into public space and creates a visual break in a busy street location.
The work was created in 1973 as SoHo transformed from an industrial district to a center for contemporary art. The sculpture was part of this artistic movement that broke down traditional boundaries between galleries and streets.
The installation shows how artists integrated their work directly into city streets by using building facades as places for creative experiments. Visitors can see how this kind of art enriches and shapes daily life in the neighborhood.
The sculpture sits directly at street level and is easy to view from the sidewalk without entering any building. The neighborhood is well served by subway lines and has many shops and cafes nearby to explore.
Artist Forrest Myers designed the work specifically to turn a blank building wall into an active part of public space. By making the surface three-dimensional, he turned the building itself into the artwork.
