Washington Square Village, Housing estate near Washington Square Park, Manhattan, US
Washington Square Village consists of two parallel residential towers clad in colored glazed brick with terraces that span across multiple blocks in Greenwich Village. The complex houses around 1,300 apartments arranged around green spaces between the buildings.
The original developers started the project in the 1960s but faced financial difficulties during construction. New York University acquired the completed buildings in 1964 and has operated them as housing for faculty and graduate students ever since.
The complex appeared in a popular television series as the residence of a main character, making it recognizable to many viewers familiar with that show. Visitors often recognize the buildings from that era and connect them with the cultural life of New York in the 1990s.
The complex is accessible from the street, though the internal gardens and spaces primarily serve residents. Visitors can view the exterior facades and explore the surrounding Greenwich Village neighborhood.
The garden between the two towers was designed by renowned landscape architect Hideo Sasaki and features carefully selected plantings. This green center of the complex provides a quiet counterpoint to the active streets of Greenwich Village.
