Grey Art Gallery, Art museum in NoHo, Manhattan, United States.
The Grey Art Gallery is an art museum in the NoHo neighborhood of Manhattan, New York, presenting both contemporary and historical works across several gallery rooms. Since 2024, it occupies its first freestanding building, giving the collection a dedicated space of its own.
The museum was founded in 1975 after a private collector donated her artworks to New York University, and it was first housed in a university building on Washington Square. Nearly fifty years later, in 2024, it moved into its first freestanding home.
The Grey Art Gallery shows works from Iran, India, and Turkey alongside American and European art made after 1945. Walking through the rooms, you can see how artists from very different parts of the world approached similar themes in their own ways.
The museum is open on several days of the week, but it is worth checking the current hours before you go, as they can change depending on the exhibition. The entrance is in NoHo, a walkable part of lower Manhattan with good access from several subway lines.
The Grey Art Gallery holds one of the largest collections of art from the Middle East found outside that region, and this entire holding came from a single private donation. It is a reminder of how much one collector's choice can shape what a museum becomes over time.
