School of the Art Institute of Chicago, Art school in Downtown Chicago, United States.
The School of the Art Institute of Chicago is a private art school in downtown Chicago, located directly on Michigan Avenue. The institution occupies several interconnected buildings that stretch along the Art Institute museum and offer access to its collections.
The institution began in 1866 under the name Chicago Academy of Design and was renamed School of the Art Institute of Chicago after financial restructuring in 1882. Over time it expanded its buildings and developed into one of the leading art schools in North America.
The school takes its name from the neighboring museum and draws students who work in open studios and show their pieces regularly in public galleries. Visitors can often walk through exhibition rooms during term time, where student work from painting, sculpture and new media is on display.
Visitors can gain insight into student work during public exhibitions, which are usually shown during fall and spring terms. Gallery rooms are located in different buildings and are typically accessible during the day when events take place.
Students can use the neighboring museum's collection of around 300,000 (three hundred thousand) artworks for their own projects and study directly from originals. The school also operates specialized departments for fashion, architecture and performance art in separate facilities throughout the downtown area.
