Lurie Garden, Botanical garden in Millennium Park, Chicago, US
Lurie Garden is a botanical garden situated on the roof of the Lakefront Millennium Parking Garage and spans approximately 2.5 acres. The space divides into two distinct planting areas separated by a water feature, containing a mix of perennials, bulbs, native prairie grasses, shrubs, and trees.
The garden opened in 2004 on land that was once marshland, then a rail yard, later a parking structure, and finally transformed into green space. This conversion shows how an urban site was completely reimagined to bring nature into the heart of the city.
The tall hedge surrounding the garden embodies Chicago's identity as a city of industry and strength. Its design expresses the motto Urbs in Horto, reflecting the relationship between the city and nature.
The grounds are open year-round, with volunteers on hand to share information about plant species and seasonal changes. Visitors can explore the different areas and plantings while learning about the local flora and how the space transforms throughout the year.
The space functions as part of the world's largest green roof and hosts 27 bird species plus numerous pollinators. The structure rests on a lightweight geofoam foundation, engineered to efficiently support the weight on the parking garage below.
