Sheldrick Forest Preserve, Forest preserve in Wilton, New Hampshire
Sheldrick Forest Preserve is a 227-acre woodland in Wilton with untouched old-growth forests. Tall white pines and thick hardwood trees fill the space, while three miles of marked trails wind through the property.
The Sheldrick family maintained this woodland in its natural condition from 1897 until 1994. The Nature Conservancy then acquired it to protect the land from development.
The forest reflects the original New Hampshire landscape with stone walls that tell stories of early settlers. These structures serve as reminders of human presence in a place now returned to nature.
Access the preserve via Temple Road and Town Farm Road, where parking areas connect to the trail system. Wear sturdy footwear since the terrain is wooded and uneven throughout.
The preserve contains six distinct natural communities, including rich moist forests and red birch groves. This diversity creates ideal breeding habitat for forest birds that nest deep within the woods.
