Sappington Cemetery State Historic Site, Historical cemetery in Arrow Rock, Missouri.
Sappington Cemetery State Historic Site covers two acres of land holding roughly 111 headstones from different periods in Missouri's past. The grounds contain graves of two state governors and Dr. John Sappington, a physician of regional prominence.
Dr. John Sappington founded this burial ground in 1831 and became one of the nation's leading quinine importers during his lifetime. His medical innovations and published works influenced early American healthcare practices in the western territories.
This burial ground has served the Arrow Rock community for nearly two centuries, with a section honoring generations of Black Americans since 1856. The 2014 expansion makes this overlooked part of the site's story more visible and accessible to those visiting today.
The grounds are open year-round from sunrise to sunset without admission fees or reservations needed. Since there are no paved paths or modern facilities, wear comfortable shoes and bring water, especially during warmer months.
Two Missouri governors who were both sons-in-law of Dr. Sappington lie buried side by side on these grounds. This family connection between medical practice and state government is rarely discussed today, though it reveals the influence this single family held across the region.
