Shawnee Methodist Mission, Methodist mission station in Fairway, United States.
Shawnee Methodist Mission is a brick mission station built in the Federal style in Fairway, Kansas. The complex consists of several symmetrical buildings arranged on a shared plot, each with plain facades and traditional construction details typical of the period.
Methodist missionaries established this station in 1830, initially using wooden structures to serve the Shawnee community. The brick buildings that stand today were put up between 1839 and 1845, replacing those earlier constructions.
The name Shawnee Methodist Mission reflects the two groups who shared this place: the Methodist missionaries and the Shawnee people. Visitors can walk through rooms that once served as classrooms and living quarters, getting a sense of how daily life was organized here.
The site is in Fairway, a short drive from Kansas City, and parking is available on the grounds. Allow enough time to visit all the buildings, since each one contains its own exhibits and period objects.
In 1855, the first legislature of Kansas Territory held its opening session in one of the school buildings on these grounds. Most visitors come expecting a mission site and are surprised to learn the place also served as the seat of early territorial government.
