Sherwood-Jayne House, Colonial house in East Setauket, New York, US.
The Sherwood-Jayne House is a two-story colonial structure with six bays on each side and a distinctive saltbox roof form. A rear wing extends the main building into an L-shaped configuration, and several outbuildings including a barn and carriage house sit on the surrounding grounds.
The house was built around 1730 and represents early colonial architecture in the region. Architect Arthur C. Nash added a northern extension at a later time that expanded the original structure while maintaining its colonial character.
The house is maintained by the Society for the Preservation of Long Island Antiquities and filled with period furnishings that show how colonial families lived. Walking through the rooms, you encounter objects that belonged to earlier generations and reflect daily life from that era.
The house is open to visitors by advance appointment only with knowledgeable guides. You should contact ahead to arrange a visit and be aware that access is limited to scheduled tours.
Architect Arthur C. Nash designed the northern addition in a way that blends seamlessly with the original colonial structure rather than appearing as an obvious later add-on. This thoughtful approach to expanding an older home shows how historical buildings can grow without losing their original character.
