Hawkins Homestead, Historic house in Stony Brook, Suffolk County, United States.
The Hawkins Homestead is a historic house in Stony Brook, New York, built in two distinct sections with different heights and construction dates. The western portion rises one and a half stories in the saltbox style typical of New England homes, while the eastern section extends two and a half stories and represents a later expansion.
The house was built in 1660 and represents one of the oldest structures in this area. It was expanded around 1720 and again near 1750, then modified again shortly after 1812 as residents adapted the building to their changing needs.
The house reflects how early settlers lived in this region, with its various sections showing the evolution of building practices and family needs over time. Walking around it, you can see how people adapted and expanded their homes as their circumstances changed.
The property is located southwest of the Bethel-Christian Avenue-Laurel Hill Historical District, making it easy to locate in relation to other local landmarks. It sits on a small plot of land and can be explored as part of a walk through the historic neighborhoods of Stony Brook.
The Three Village Community Trust took on preservation efforts after 2018 to protect this centuries-old home for future visitors and residents. The work demonstrates how local organizations actively maintain connections to the area's past in the present day.
