Skene Manor, Victorian mansion in Whitehall, New York.
Skene Manor is a three-story grey sandstone house designed by architect Almon Chandler Hopson, featuring a mansard roof with two towers, three flat-roofed porches, and seven original fireplaces throughout. The structure includes six dormers with pediments and paneled interior spaces that showcase the full scope of Victorian design.
The house was built in 1874 and added to the National Register in 1974 under the name Judge Joseph Potter House, marking a century between its completion and official recognition. This span reflects its survival as a significant example of Victorian architecture in the region.
The main foyer displays a large wall mural depicting a medieval hunt scene, complemented by stained glass windows and ornate ceiling details that shape the interior character.
The manor sits on approximately 6 acres of grounds in Whitehall that visitors can explore throughout their visit. Guided tours take guests through all three floors and the surrounding outdoor areas.
The roof features decorative wrought iron ridging that gives the building a handcrafted sophistication rarely seen in typical houses of that era. Inside, the grand staircase skillfully combines multiple wood types such as mahogany, walnut, and oak.
