Smalley's Inn & Restaurant, Italian restaurant in Carmel, United States
Smalley's Inn & Restaurant was a restaurant in a brick building on Gleneida Avenue in Carmel, New York, with traditional dining rooms furnished in wood and a menu rooted in Italian-American cooking. The building sat in the center of town and had served multiple purposes over its long history, including as an inn.
James Smalley opened the inn in 1852, running it as a hotel until a fire destroyed the original building in 1924. After it was rebuilt, the focus shifted gradually toward dining, and the place continued to operate as a restaurant until 2020.
For generations, people in Carmel came to this restaurant to mark family celebrations and local gatherings over Italian-American food. The wooden dining rooms and straightforward décor gave it the feeling of a place that belonged to the town rather than to any particular owner.
The restaurant closed permanently in 2020 and no longer receives visitors. The brick building on Gleneida Avenue is still standing and can be seen from the street during a walk through the center of Carmel.
A tombstone belonging to Elizabeth Smalley, the founder's daughter, was found beneath the basement stairs of the building. This discovery shows how the structure was put to very different uses across the years.
