Smith-McDowell House, Antebellum brick mansion in Asheville, United States.

The Smith-McDowell House features four stories of brick construction with period furnishings representing nineteenth-century architectural design in Western North Carolina.

Built around 1840 by James McConnell Smith, the house passed through generations until 1898 when Dr. Charles Van Bergen commissioned Frederick Law Olmsted Jr for landscape improvements.

The Western North Carolina Historical Association maintains the house as a museum, displaying artifacts and exhibits that reflect regional domestic life during the 1800s.

The museum opens Wednesday through Saturday from 11 AM to 5 PM, with admission fees of $5 for adults and free entry for children under seven years old.

Frederick Law Olmsted Jr, son of the Biltmore Estate landscape architect, designed the grounds while Richard Morris Hunt may have created the carriage house plans.
