Downtown Asheville Historic District
Downtown Asheville Historic District, Historic district in Asheville, United States.
Downtown Asheville Historic District is a neighborhood in the city center containing 279 preserved buildings that show Colonial Revival, Queen Anne, and Art Deco styles. The structures spread across roughly 96 acres and form the core of the city.
The district took shape in the late 1800s as the city's center for commerce and government. It was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1979 and expanded twice afterward.
Art galleries, music venues, and independent shops occupy the restored buildings, reflecting how locals and visitors use the space today. Street performers and local artists shape the daily rhythm of downtown.
The neighborhood is easy to explore on foot, with restaurants, shops, and lodging available throughout. Parking areas are scattered across the district, and guided tours help visitors understand the buildings and their stories.
The 1927 Flatiron Building is among the oldest surviving commercial structures and shapes street corners with its distinctive form. Nearby, the 1895 Drhumor Building offers a glimpse of how early commercial construction appeared.
