Zealandia, Tudor Revival mansion on Beaucatcher Mountain, Asheville, United States.
Zealandia is a three-story residence built in 1889 on Beaucatcher Mountain featuring Tudor Revival design with steeply pitched roofs, large chimneys, and wrought iron entrance gates. The structure includes a covered carriage entry and distinctive pebbledash-on-brick surface patterns on its exterior walls.
John Evans Brown constructed the original house in 1889 after returning from New Zealand, naming it Zealandia to commemorate his experience there. The building was later added to the National Register of Historic Places, securing its status as an important example of the region's architectural heritage.
The dining room features a mural commissioned in 1919 showing family members dressed in classical robes, inspired by Italian Renaissance painting traditions. This decorative choice reflects the owner's connection to European artistic styles and his appreciation for old-world elegance.
The property is located on Vance Gap Road and is not open to the public at this time. While the building itself is closed to visitors, its distinctive exterior architecture can be viewed from the street to appreciate its design and character.
The house features pebbledash-on-brick patterns modeled after Haddon Hall in England, blending medieval design elements into its structure. This distinctive surface treatment with strong European influences sets it apart from other regional buildings.
