South Side German Historic District, German heritage district in Quincy, US.

The South Side German Historic District is a residential neighborhood in Quincy with architecture from the late 1800s, including Gothic Revival, Italianate, and Queen Anne styles. The houses display the typical craftsmanship and building methods that German settlers brought with them.

German immigrants established this neighborhood in the 19th century, constructing homes based on architectural styles from their homeland. The area grew to become a significant hub for the German community in the Mississippi River region.

St. Boniface Church from the 1860s still anchors the spiritual and social life of the district, showing how deeply the German community put down roots here. The building serves as a gathering place and symbol of identity for residents and visitors alike.

The neighborhood is located south of downtown Quincy and can be explored on foot, with the different architectural styles clearly visible throughout. Walking tours are available to help you understand the history and details of the individual buildings.

The neighborhood was long known locally as 'Calftown' because German immigrant families kept numerous calves there during the early settlement period. This name reflects how rural and urban life blended together in those early years.
