John Wood Mansion, Greek Revival mansion in Quincy, United States

John Wood Mansion is a building with four large columns at the front and fourteen rooms inside. The house has fine details both outside and in, showing how skilled builders worked in that era.

The building was constructed between 1835 and 1838, when Quincy was a new city growing rapidly. The man for whom it was built was one of Illinois' leading figures at the time and linked the house to the city's development.

The house displays furniture and belongings of the Wood family, showing how wealthy people lived and used their rooms in the 1800s. Visitors can see how the family spent their daily lives in these spaces and what objects held meaning for them.

You can visit the house only through guided tours, which are offered in spring and fall months, and there are also special candlelit tours during winter. It is best to check visiting hours ahead of time, as they change with the seasons.

The owner personally made the four large columns for the house by building a special lathe to shape the wooden pieces. This shows how hands-on and crafted the creation of this house truly was.
