Snow's Island, National Historic Landmark in Florence County, South Carolina

Snow's Island is a swampy lowland region spanning approximately 5 square miles between the Lynches and Pee Dee rivers in South Carolina, covered with cypress and pine forests. Dense undergrowth, cane thickets, and twisting vines create an intricate natural maze throughout the area.

Francis Marion established his military headquarters here in 1780 while leading armed resistance against British occupation during the American Revolutionary War. The swampy terrain provided natural defenses and shelter for his growing force of militia fighters.

The place takes its name from a family that settled here and represents a retreat that visitors can experience as a symbol of resistance and independence. Its designation as a National Historic Landmark reflects how this location remains part of local and national memory.

The property is privately owned and access is restricted, though distant views of the swamp can be seen from Dunham Bluff Road near US Route 378. Visitors should plan to observe the location from public roads rather than entering the property itself.

Up to 250 soldiers found shelter in this impenetrable swamp where dense vegetation made pursuit nearly impossible. This natural fortress allowed a smaller force to hold out against one of the most powerful military powers of that era.
