St. Aloysius Gonzaga's Church

St. Aloysius Gonzaga's Church is a Catholic house of worship in Harlem located at 209-217 West 132nd Street, featuring red brick walls with celadon glazed accents and polychrome terra cotta sculptural details. The building combines Italian Gothic Revival style with ornamental elements that include relief carvings depicting religious figures throughout its exterior.

Architect William W. Renwick designed this Italian Gothic Revival structure in 1902, with construction completed in 1904. The church was built to serve the growing religious needs of the neighborhood's immigrant communities during a period of rapid urban development.

The congregation evolved from serving German, Irish, and Italian immigrants to becoming a center for African American worship and gospel music. This transformation shaped the spiritual life of the neighborhood and remains visible in the diverse community that gathers here today.
