St. John's Cathedral, Anglican cathedral in downtown Knoxville, United States.
St. John's Cathedral is an Anglican church in downtown Knoxville designed in the Gothic Revival style with stone walls, tall spires, and detailed rose windows. The building displays classic Gothic architectural principles throughout both its exterior and interior.
The cathedral was completed in 1892 by architect Joseph W. Yost and replaced an earlier structure built in 1826 when the congregation first formed. Since then the building has served the growing community and reflects over a century of church history in the region.
The cathedral serves as the bishop's seat for the Diocese of East Tennessee and is an active gathering place for the congregation. People come here for regular services and important celebrations throughout the year.
The cathedral is open Tuesday through Friday from 8:30 AM to 4:30 PM and Sunday from 8:00 AM to 12:30 PM for visits. You can enter freely and find it easily located right in downtown Knoxville.
The cathedral courtyard contains a labyrinth with a winding path of about 750 feet patterned after Chartres Cathedral and made with terra cotta stones. This meditative space offers a peaceful retreat from the surrounding streets.
