Spencer Park Dentzel Carousel, Historic carousel in Riverside Park, Logansport, Indiana, United States.
The Spencer Park Dentzel Carousel is a wooden carousel with a diameter of about 42 feet located in Riverside Park in Logansport. The structure has 16 platforms featuring three animals per row plus four two-seat chariots where visitors can ride.
The carousel was built between 1900 and 1903 by the Dentzel Carousel Company, a renowned American manufacturer of amusement rides. After Robison Park in Fort Wayne closed in 1919, the carousel was moved to Logansport where it has remained.
The animals on this carousel show an unusual selection beyond typical horses, including hand-carved lions, tigers, deer, and giraffes that reflect early 1900s fascination with distant wildlife. This exotic menagerie tells visitors what people found magical and exciting during that era.
The carousel is located in Riverside Park at 1208 Riverside Drive and is a popular feature of the park area. Visitors should note that it operates seasonally, so checking hours ahead of time is recommended before planning a visit.
The carousel features an original brass ring dispenser that still works, giving visitors a chance to catch rings as they ride past. Catching a ring successfully rewards the rider with a free ride, a tradition that dates back to the ride's carnival origins.
