Steppenwolf Theatre Company is a theater company with three performance venues at 1650 N Halsted Street in Chicago: the Downstairs Theatre, Upstairs Theatre, and Merle Reskin Garage Theatre. The spaces sit within a multi-story building complex that brings together different formats and productions under one roof.
The company was founded in 1974 by Terry Kinney, Jeff Perry, and Gary Sinise in the basement of a grade school in Highland Park. It later moved to Chicago and grew into an institution of American theater across the country.
The ensemble follows a deeply collaborative approach to creating theater, with actors working together over decades to develop productions from the ground up. This working method shaped a new form of realism on American stages that remains visible today.
