Steppenwolf Theatre Company is a theater company with three performance venues at 1650 N Halsted Street in Chicago: the Downstairs Theatre, Upstairs Theatre, and Merle Reskin Garage Theatre. The company was founded in 1974 by Terry Kinney, Jeff Perry, and Gary Sinise in the basement of a grade school in Highland Park. It later moved to Chicago and grew into an institution of American theater across the country.
The ensemble follows a deeply collaborative approach to creating theater, with actors working together over decades to develop productions from the ground up. This working method shaped a new form of realism on American stages that remains visible today.
