Swatara Furnace, Historic iron furnace in Pine Grove Township, Pennsylvania.
Swatara Furnace is an industrial site spanning about 200 acres along Mill Creek in Pine Grove Township, featuring the remains of a smelting furnace, a stone dam, and the ironmaster's house. The grounds also contain stone worker cottages and support buildings that together show how a complete iron-making operation was laid out.
The furnace was founded in 1830 and became the first charcoal-fired smelting works in Schuylkill County, producing around 1,200 tons of iron yearly. Operations ceased in 1853 as iron production shifted away from this region.
The site displays worker cottages and the ironmaster's residence side by side, showing how industrial workers and managers lived in the 1800s. You can sense the social structure of a manufacturing community through the different buildings and their placement.
The grounds are walkable with paths connecting the main structures and the dam area, marked with information signs. The terrain is uneven with some steep slopes, so wear sturdy shoes and allow time to explore without rushing.
The water management system with its stone dam and channels was essential to running the furnace and shows how early engineers harnessed water power for industry. This engineering know-how was just as important as the smelting technique itself.
