Niagara Falls Station and Customhouse Interpretive Center, Railway station and museum in Niagara Falls, United States
Niagara Falls Station and Customhouse Interpretive Center blends a working transit hub with a restored historic building serving both travelers and visitors seeking to learn about the region. The two-story structure features a railway platform, museum spaces, and retail areas all within the same complex.
The U.S. Customhouse was relocated from Lewiston to this site in 1863 to oversee border operations, remaining active until it ceased operations in 1998. The building thus represents nearly 135 years of continuous use for managing cross-border movement and inspection.
The building holds the Underground Railroad Heritage Center on its lower level, telling stories of people who sought freedom by crossing into Canada during the 19th century.
The station provides Amtrak rail services connecting to New York City and Toronto with multiple departures throughout the day via a two-level facility. Visitors can easily explore both the transit areas and museum exhibits, with retail options available on-site for refreshments and essentials.
The complex still operates U.S. Customs processing facilities on its upper floor while preserving its designation as a National Register historic site. This dual purpose is uncommon, making it a working government facility housed within a protected historical building.
