Niagara Gorge

Niagara Gorge is a deep rock formation running along the border between Ontario and New York, marked by nearly vertical walls made of different rock layers. The river flows through this narrow passage, creating several natural features like whirlpools and rapids along the way.

The gorge formed thousands of years ago when glaciers melted and created a powerful river that slowly cut through hard rock. Over time, flowing water eroded the different layers and shaped the deep gap we see today.

The gorge marks the boundary between two nations and draws visitors who want to witness the power of water and study the geology. People from both sides come here to experience the dramatic landscape and capture photographs of the rocks and river.

The best way to explore the gorge is on the many hiking trails that run along the river and offer different viewpoints. Sturdy footwear is important because the paths can be steep and slippery, especially near the water.

Within the gorge is a section where water rotates in a circular motion before flowing onward. This natural spinning occurs because of how the river curves through the rock and the way water forces combine at that spot.
