The Deveaux School Historic District encompasses multiple buildings from different architectural periods, including the remaining Shop structure from the original campus.
Judge Samuel DeVeaux established the institution in 1852 with a donation of $154,432 and real estate to create a school for orphaned boys.
The institution operated as a military academy and preparatory school, following educational practices similar to the U.S. Military Academy at West Point.
The district now functions as DeVeaux Woods State Park, maintaining daily operational hours from 8:00 AM to 8:00 PM throughout the year.
Van Rensselaer Hall, constructed in 1857, contained multiple facilities including classrooms, a chapel, hospital, library, and dormitories for 25 students.
