Deveaux School Historic District

Deveaux School Historic District is an educational complex in Niagara Falls with buildings from different architectural periods, including the remaining Shop structure from the original campus. The preserved structures show the layout and construction typical of a 19th-century boarding school.

Judge Samuel DeVeaux founded the institution in 1852 with a substantial donation and land to create a school for orphaned boys. Van Rensselaer Hall, built in 1857, became the campus center and housed classrooms, a chapel, hospital space, library, and student dormitories.

The institution operated as a military academy and preparatory school, following educational methods like those at the U.S. Military Academy at West Point. You can still see how the buildings reflect this disciplined approach to learning.

The grounds are now accessible to visitors as DeVeaux Woods State Park and open daily. The preserved buildings can be explored, and you should allow time for a leisurely walk through the historic campus.

Van Rensselaer Hall was a multipurpose building that remarkably combined all major school functions under one roof, an unusual solution for its time. This design reflected how the school aimed to provide complete care for orphaned students in a compact space.
