Uptown Hudson Tubes, railway tunnel in the United States
Uptown Hudson Tubes is a railway tunnel beneath the Hudson River in New York City that carries trains between Manhattan and New Jersey. The structure consists of multiple parallel tunnel tubes bored deep beneath the riverbed to facilitate ongoing rail operations.
The tunnel was constructed in the 1980s as a replacement for the older Hudson River Railroad Tubes dating from the early 20th century. This infrastructure project was necessary to address the growing demands of rail traffic between the two states.
The tubes are not accessible to pedestrians, as they are used exclusively for train traffic. You can observe them from the surface where rail lines cross between the two states.
The tunnel is remarkable for its engineering challenge, built deep beneath a wide river with strong currents. Engineers had to develop innovative techniques to construct the structure under such difficult conditions.
