Utica Covered Bridge, Historical covered bridge in Lewistown, Maryland
Utica Covered Bridge is a wooden structure near Lewistown featuring a Burr truss design that combines arches and trusses into one load-bearing system. The bridge measures about 100 feet (30 meters) long and sits low over the creek bed.
Built in 1834 to cross the Monocacy River, the structure survived an 1889 flood but had to be relocated. Workers moved it to Fishing Creek in 1891, where it remains today as a relic of 19th-century bridge engineering.
This bridge reflects a time when wooden covered structures lined Maryland roads as practical transportation solutions. Its design shows how people once built strong but simple crossings over water.
The bridge sits along Utica Road near Lewistown and has parking available nearby for visitors. The setting is rural and open, making it easy to walk around and view the structure from different angles.
After the 1889 flood damaged the original crossing, workers salvaged the wooden sections and transported them by wagon to the current location over Fishing Creek. A central pier was added during reconstruction to reinforce the structure at its new home.
