Walnut Point State Park, State park with wooded areas in Douglas County, Illinois.
Walnut Point State Park is a 671-acre natural area in Douglas County featuring a 24-acre lake surrounded by ash, oak, hickory, maple, walnut, and sassafras trees. The park includes the Upper Embarras Woods nature preserve, which protects native forest ecosystems within its boundaries.
The park takes its name from Douglas County's first pioneer settlement, which was established in the area during the 1830s. It was formally developed and opened to the public as a state park in 1968.
The wooded sections reflect how central Illinois landscapes naturally developed over time, and people come here to experience these native habitats firsthand. Walking through the different areas gives visitors a sense of what the region looked like before it was settled.
The park provides camping with electric hookups, tent sites, picnic shelters, and boat rentals for visitors who want to stay overnight or enjoy day trips. About 3.6 miles of trails allow you to walk through different sections and observe the forest and wildlife.
The park includes a prairie restoration area that displays native grasses and wildflowers from Illinois' original landscape before European settlement arrived. This section demonstrates how the entire region once looked beneath the forests and development.
