Watertown Masonic Temple

The Watertown Masonic Temple is a three-story Neoclassical building with six Doric columns supporting a triangular pediment across its front facade. Located in downtown Watertown on Washington Street, it displays the formal architectural style typical of fraternal order meeting halls from that era.

Construction of the temple began in 1912 and was completed in 1914, with delays caused by steel availability during that period. The building was part of a wave of Masonic temples built across America in the early 1900s as these fraternal organizations grew in influence and membership.

The temple has served as a gathering place for Freemasons in the region and demonstrates the fraternal order's importance to the local community. Buildings like this reveal how such organizations took root in small cities and brought their members together.

The building is located in downtown Watertown and is easily accessible on foot from Washington Street. Visitors can view the exterior anytime, with any interior visits depending on current availability and conditions at the site.

Plans emerged in the 2010s to transform this National Register of Historic Places building into a performing arts center. This adaptive reuse project demonstrates how historic structures are being reimagined to serve new purposes and ensure their future relevance.
